Captain Kristian Bearscove

Born in Seattle, Washington, my family moved to Maine when I was 8. We settled in Lincoln County. It was during a 5th grade tour of US Navy Patrol Squadron 8 at Brunswick Naval Air Station when I decided I would become a pilot.

While attending Wiscasset High School I was active in many areas. Videography, Concert/Pep/Marching Band, Volunteer Junior Firefighter, and was a cadet in the United States Naval Sea Cadets as a member of the Orion Squadron out of NAS Brunswick. I spent 7 years in the Sea Cadets rising to the Leading Petty Officer (top NCO) with the rank of PO2 before graduating high school in 1995.

While attending Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, AZ, I became a licensed amateur radio operator (“ham radio”).  My callsign is KC7UNK.  I was quite active in the Emergency Services side of ham radio.  Also during college I volunteered at the local community cable access channel as a camera operator, editor, and eventually became a paid employee as the Public Access Coordinator for the town and graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Aeronautical Science and a minor in Aviation Weather.

Halfway through my college years, I joined the Civil Air Patrol, as a member of Prescott’s 206 Composite Squadron.  I was a Transport Mission Pilot and the Communications Officer for the squadron until acquiring my first flying job out of upstate New York.

My first commercial flying job was with Landcare Aviation, in Utica, New York. I flew C172’s performing geo-referenced aerial imaging/mapping.  I flew all over the country in the Cessna’s with camera systems that cost more than the airplane and me combined. Twice I flew from upstate New York to Los Angeles California.  During that time I transferred to the Mohawk Griffus Senior Squadron of CAP where I became the safety officer.

After acquiring my first airline job in 2002 , I moved back to Maine, settling in Richmond.  Boston-Maine Airways, based in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, was an airline created by the large train company Guilford Transportation. I flew all throughout the northeast in a Jetstream 31 turbo-prop as a first officer.  During this period I transferred to the Augusta Composite Squadron and joined the Richmond Fire Department. I also became a substitute teacher at my alma mater, Wiscasset High School.

In 2004 a career opportunity presented itself to me.  I was hired by Colgan Air, Inc. flying their Saab 340 Turbo-props out of Portland, Maine.  Based in Boston, I am currently a Captain, Check Airman, and Base Manager and live in Trenton, ME, home of the 38th Composite Squadron.

Paths cross as a CAP visitor shares the ramp with a local resident, a Saab Turbo-prop in Bar Harbor.

I'm also a volunteer firefighter at the Trenton Volunteer Fire Department and a paid volunteer firefighter at the Ellsworth Fire Department. That's me to the right in my turn-out gear.
